The American artist Nan Goldin, rooted in the New York No Wave underground movement of the late 1970s, has always questioned the definitions of gender and normality with her political view through the camera. In her photographs, she documents her life and the lives of her friends, telling stories of love and intimacy, addiction and loss. With sometimes tender snapshots of these themes, Goldin continues to shape the perception of her time to this day.
The documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” paints a captivating and emotional portrait of the artist and activist and her commitment against a pharmaceutical company that is primarily responsible for the global opioid crisis and into whose clutches Goldin falls after an operation. After becoming addicted to the painkiller, she managed to quit, unlike countless others. Since then, she has fought tirelessly as an activist against the Sackler pharmaceutical dynasty. After becoming addicted to the painkiller, she managed to quit, unlike countless others. Since then, she has fought tirelessly as an activist against the Sackler pharmaceutical dynasty. But the billionaire family is also one of the world’s biggest patrons of the arts, on whom artists like Goldin herself depend.
The film by Oscar®-winning director Laura Poitras (CITIZENFOUR) was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival.
