Eric Hattan
Videoarbeit
28.11.2004 – 02.01.2005

The artist Eric Hattan, born in Wettingen, Switzerland, in 1955, is still relatively unknown in Germany. Yet his work has been exhibited several times a year since 1990, mostly in Switzerland, of course, but also in France, Canada, the United States, and even in Egypt and Argentina. In Germany, however, his work has rarely been seen. His work has only been shown in Germany on the occasion of a scholarship stay at the Künstlerhaus Betanien in Berlin in 1996, in recent years by the Kunstverein Mannheim, and in a group exhibition at the Phoenix-Hallen in Dortmund this year. The Kunstverein Bremerhaven is now presenting Eric Hattan’s work for the first time in a solo exhibition in northern Germany.

The artist’s primary means of expression are videos. And so video sequences will also be the focus of the exhibition in Bremerhaven. Most of them are short sequences whose content relates to everyday situations. Surprising situations, however, which are keenly observed and filmed by the artist. He himself describes his approach as follows: “The matter-of-factness with which cats change direction and the simultaneity with which life unfolds and produces the most vivid images never ceases to amaze me. When walking through the city, a small video camera is the ideal notebook.” Around 25 of his video works and installations will be on display in Bremerhaven.
