Hallo Westen!
24.11.2013 – 12.01.2014
“Hello West!” - with this greeting, the Bremerhaven Art Association invites its visitors to the new exhibition in the art gallery from November 24, 2013. But the sender and recipient of this greeting cannot be clearly identified. The term “West” evokes a wide variety of associations, is and remains negotiable as a term and metaphor, and can be both a geographical and political place. As a historically and culturally shaped space, it takes on a different meaning for each viewer, can be a place of longing and promise, of fulfillment and disappointment. As the “Wild West”, it appears adventurous, reminiscent of the economic miracle or pop culture, is considered capitalist and, for emigrants to America or for people who wanted to flee from the GDR to West Germany, a place of hope and a goal of departure.
The Famed artist group takes up these different interpretation possibilities in their work and approaches the topic from very different perspectives. In 2003, Sebastian Matthias Kretzschmar (1978), Kilian Schellbach (1971) and Jan Thomaneck (*1974) joined forces in Leipzig to form Famed. Through their joint work, they undermine the usual image of the author and thus question the myth of the individual artist. Their multi-layered works are conceptual, narrative and ironic, can refer to literature and film, play with words and objects and always establish a connection to the exhibition space.
The artist group selects objects for their installations, places them in a new context and thus changes their original meaning. Everyday objects are robbed of their function and elevated to works of art through the new context. The well-known and irrelevant become the focus of our attention and thus lead to irritation and astonishment in the viewer.
The Leipzig artist group is now daring to set off for Bremerhaven. For their exhibition “Hello West!” in the Kunsthalle, new works are created that enter into an exciting dialogue with selected works from recent years.
