Johanna von Monkiewitsch
from different places
20.03. – 25.04.2021
The artist Johanna von Monkiewitsch (*1979 in Rome, grew up in Germany) works with possible realities and the questions of image and reality. On closer inspection, however, the artist removes the image of reality from its context of reality. Placed in a different spatial and temporal context, a new material and sensual relationship emerges. Light, time and everyday materials become metaphorically questioning assertions that exist between space, object and image. This creates a new reality that turns a scientific phenomenon into a sculpture. Her artistic work includes sculptures, installations, photography as well as canvas and video works. Johanna von Monkiewitsch studied at the HBK Braunschweig from 1999 to 2007. The artist lives and works in Cologne.
Under the title “from different places”, Johanna von Monkiewitsch, current scholarship holder of the Bremerhaven Scholarship, presents new works that will be on display at the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven.
Among other things, an expansive video installation will be on display that combines light projection and object for the first time in Johanna von Monkiewitsch’s work. The artist films sunlight and uses it as a sculptural element in the installation. Among other things, the time factor in the form of this light transfer is treated by the artist as an equal object of the sculpture and projected onto parts of the installation.
