Jürgen Partenheimer
DAS ARCHIV – LE BOULEAU VOLANT
16.11.2014 – 04.01.2015
It has now been exactly 20 years since Jürgen Partenheimer’s works were last on display in Bremerhaven. Now the internationally renowned artist is returning to the port city and is showing a group of works that had to be done without for an even longer time: Le bouleau volant rested in a box in the artist’s archive for 32 years. This year it was exhibited again for the first time in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg - Falckenberg Collection. The presentation was part of an open cooperation with the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver and the Modern Art Collection in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich.
The collection of 79 works on A4 paper was created in 1979 and was Partenheimer’s contribution to the 1980 Paris Biennale. Le bouleau volant is a socially critical contribution to the stylistic freedom of art. The drawings, collages, paintings and notes in the group of works initially give the impression of heterogeneous individual sheets. But their singular meaning is not the focus. Rather, they should be understood as a collection of texts or material, the individual parts of which can only be experienced and connected in context. Like a kaleidoscope, the individual elements come together to form an image in any correspondence and in desired or random constellations.
Jürgen Partenheimer (*1947, Munich) is one of the pioneering positions in contemporary art with his unique interpretation of abstraction, which he calls “metaphysical realism”. In his artistic formulation, constructive elements of minimal art are combined with lyrical intensity. With critical awareness, Partenheimer measures and maps the constantly redefined freedom of art and its practice. Partenheimer’s work opens up individual spaces for thought and imagination, which can be explored in the exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven.
