In recent years, the Kunstverein Bremerhaven has archived its collection. Piece by piece, the works have been measured, described, photographed, and inventoried. Now the works are back in the archive, the association’s storage rooms. They are rarely shown. Individual works are loaned to exhibitions in Germany and abroad. Occasionally, the association presents smaller parts of the collection in an exhibition entitled Potpourri. Essentially, however, the storage rooms are a repository of possibilities. The possibilities of different spaces in an art museum.
Now the idea of an art repository is also the subject of an exhibition at the Kunsthalle. The artist Jürgen Paas, born in Krefeld in 1958, who has been active in many museum and art association exhibitions in recent years with his depot and archive installations, will focus on the archival character of his work, which is crucial to his artistic oeuvre. By combining picture panels to form picture fields and layers, Jürgen Paas transforms spaces into infinite archives of possible image variations.
The individual image surfaces themselves are characterized by absolute monochromaticity and minimalism in their execution. The artistic exploration of his wall and floor objects thus takes place in an exciting “in between,” in an intermediate area without the clear contours of classical painting or sculpture concepts. Jürgen Paas’ work is defined in a border area between painting and object.
