The region between the Weser and Elbe is not only the region of origin of many visual artists, but also a temporary home for well-known artists from abroad. One of them was the Swedish artist Cecilia Edefalk (* 1954). She lived in Bremerhaven for a good year in 1996/97 as a scholarship holder of the Kunst & Nutzen association. It was a stay that was one of the most productive of her artistic career and which had a lasting impact on her oeuvre.
However, the later documenta participant had already become known to a larger audience in Germany through an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt. The four-part series In the painting the painting (1995/96) attracted particular attention at the time, showing the same motif of a copulating couple, each square rotated by 90°. The artist portrayed and presented the highly emotional act in a distanced, analytical manner. This analytical and serial work is characteristic of her artistic work. The characteristics are also evident in the groups of works that she subsequently began in Bremerhaven and with which she was represented in the accompanying program of the Venice Biennale in 1997, among other places. The Kunstmuseum is now dedicating a room to the artist with a selection of works that date back to her stay in Bremerhaven.
