The Quiet Rebellion of Things
The Schröder donation
23.03.2025 – 29.03.2026

Following donations to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (2019) and the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna (2018), the collector Alexander Schröder has given the Kunsthalle and Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven a collection of 57 works by renowned contemporary artists: These include works by renowned artists such as Kai Althoff, Cerith Wyn Evans, Isa Genzken, Kitty Kraus, Lucy McKenzie, Paulina Olowska, Manfred Pernice and Andreas Slominski. The donation is thus the most extensive in the history of the Kunsthalle and Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven to date and represents a significant expansion of its collection.
In the 1990s, Alexander Schröder began collecting with a particular focus on the art of the 1990s and 2000s. His collection thus provides an insight into the art of this period and reflects the idiosyncratic, poetic and critical tendencies of the artistic practices of these years, which were characterised by conceptual strategies. In addition to institutional and economic criticism, these include the examination of public spaces and architecture, the questioning of existing norms in relation to gender, identity and sexuality, the exploration of social and cultural aspects as well as forms of critical painting.

Curated by Stefanie Kleefeld, Director Kunsthalle and Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven and Alexander Schröder.
