Gereon Krebber
wollte könnte sollte
14.09. – 02.11.2008
The Kunstverein Bremerhaven von 1886 is exhibiting works by sculptor Gereon Krebber (born 1973). Gereon Krebber first studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Tony Cragg and Hubert Kiecol before continuing his studies at the Royal College of Art in London. He lives and works in Cologne and London.
The artist’s preferred working materials are everyday items such as colorful balloons, cling film, and oatmeal. Krebber is interested in the formal logic of materials, their spatial quality, and their surface texture.
The form and function of Krebber’s sculptures cannot be clearly determined. They are neither representations of familiar objects nor demonstrations of the material world and its formal design possibilities; they are neither mere surfaces nor entirely plastic bodies.
This ambiguity forces us to reflect on ourselves. In contemplating the object, we recognize the aesthetic quality of its form. It is not the perfect craftsmanship and the convincing sensual design of the object, it is the fact that we can cognitively set this form in motion in terms of the possible meanings that can be associated with it.
Krebber’s works take circumstances as opportunities: on this occasion, Krebber develops forms rich in references and associations that assert themselves independently.
