Sergej Jensen, born in Maglegaard, Denmark, in 1973, is one of the younger representatives of the contemporary generation of painters. After studying under Prof. Thomas Bayrle at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, he now lives and works in Berlin. He has been attracting attention since the late 1990s with exhibitions in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. In 2000, he was represented at the exhibition “German Art in Moscow,” in 2001 at an exhibition at the Schirn in Frankfurt, and in 2003 at the exhibition “deutschemalereizweitausenddrei” at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, which provided a highly acclaimed overview of the current generation of German painters.
Sergej Jensen stands out from most young contemporary painters through his idiosyncratic use of materials. For example, in his work, the canvas is not merely a support for a layer of paint applied using conservative techniques, but rather a deliberately employed part of the overall appearance. Karola Grässlin, Kunstverein Braunschweig, therefore suggests that Jensen’s “private iconography of reduced forms, remnants of perspective, almost amateurish-looking material playfulness, and wear and tear” can also be read “as a commentary on a colorful world of commodities as well as on contemporary painting, which presents a reality that is conceived as tangible and binding.”
