Signe Guttormsen
Jedes Mal ein anderes Mal
28.08. – 03.10.2005

In the studio of painter Signe Guttormsen, visitors notice unusual tools. There are rain gutters, jugs, and various containers of all kinds. However, the most striking tool for a painter is the circular saw. It is one of her most important working tools. The artist uses the circular saw to make incisions in her works, with the saw mark itself forming a shape or a drawing. The flow of paint runs counter to these incisions. Signe Guttormsen regulates the application of paint by pouring it over the picture carrier. In this way, the divergence between the imaginary and the factual in the picture is addressed.

This exploration in Signe Guttormsen’s work is reflected in a variety of ways in the series of works exhibited at the Kunsthalle. In some cases, the image carrier is curved like a screen, while in others it is formed into a metal body. And in the paper works, too, the objectivity of the paper is made clear by the folding. Despite these interventions, Signe Guttormsen’s images are characterized by a smooth and perfect surface. The form of the works is also determined by the effect of gravity on the flow of paint, whereby the artist relinquishes control.

Signe Guttormsen was born in Copenhagen in 1964. She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She has received several awards and scholarships. She has lived and worked in Cologne since 1996.

A catalog and an edition will be published to accompany the exhibition. The catalog was supported by The Danish Arts Council.
